November 10, 2004

Well, I’m now keeping score. With the last set of classes, I started handing out a form to let the students grade me. The scoring and the comments have been most interesting and appreciated.

So far, I have used this form for three Reiki 1 classes and a Reiki 3 class. This coming weekend will be my first Reiki 2 class where I will be able to get feedback.

The scoring is interesting, and there is a point that I don’t know how to take it. I have had to fill out similar things, and I know what runs through a student’s head. There is the thought of “Gee, I can’t give all 10s.” Then there is the “Well, they weren’t absolutely perfect in everything.” And then people have different grading values.

I had a similar thing when I was in school, in the clinicals. Each person I worked on was asked to rate me on a scale of 1 through 10 (10 being the highest). For the most part, I was graded with 10s and 9s. however, there was the occasional 5 (which really made me wonder because I know how good a massage I gave). It just shows that people’s values ride on different scales. This is why they initially set a Reiki master’s class at $10,000. Ms. Takata felt that westerners (us) didn’t value things unless they paid a lot for them.

The comments have been interesting also. I like reading the comments, and they are helpful. It is nice seeing good comments, but it is helpful seeing those that tell me that I’m not perfect. They tell me what I may have missed with a particular class, or something that I can add to make learning easier.

I am actually keeping track of all the scores and comments I get, and using them to hopefully become a better teacher. I will be posting them on a page under “The Instructor” section. I feel that people can look and see what previous students think of my teaching abilities. And truthfully, I’m not afraid to do this. I expect to continue to get good scores. If I start getting bad scores, then it means that I am not doing a good job, and will either change what I am doing or stop teaching. If I can’t teach well, then I won’t teach at all.

Each class gets the same form and answers the same questions. I have the composite answers below broken down by class type (and remember, I have not given this form to a Reiki 2 class yet). And the other thing to remember is that since I am allowing a decimal place, a single 9 will make a composite score of 10 impossible.

Question Reiki 1 (10 = highest) Reiki 3 (1 = lowest)
How valuable were the ideas and concepts? 9.9 9.8
How effective was the presentation of the material? 9.6 9.5
How well did the instructor know the subject? 10.0 9.5
How well did the instructor respond to questions? 9.7 9.5
Would you recommend this class to others? 9.7 9.8
How would you rate this program overall? 9.7 9.8

There are also some free form questions which some answer, and some don't. Below are some of the answers I have received.

Question Answers (I may comment in here)
What did you enjoy most?

Hands on instruction / experience.

The feeling of power and the ability to heal.

The organization and the energy (Brian's)

Your knowledge and eagerness to teach.

Your presentation was superb.

Practicing the exercises.

This is referring to the energy exercises I teach with the Reiki.

The energy of the building and people.

Energies shared.

The entire class.

What could make the class better?

It's a little crowded.

Unfortunately, I have a limited amount of space, and can only squeeze four students in at a time (except for Reiki 2). If I have more than that, I will have to rent a conference room, but with the cost of rooms ($200 - $300 for a day), I would need to have 10 students to make it cost effective (especially when you consider what I charge for classes).

Initially, an overview of the material and how the day will be structured.

I thought I did this, but maybe I need to rethink what I do.

Would have liked more info on Reiki symbols and attunements.

This question started the series of questions in the post of October 9, 2004. Please go there for all the details.

Additional Comments

Very good class.

I am happy I was here.

It was a pleasure meeting you - will you be available for questions, R/T practical questions, R/T applications?

I am always available for questions.

Enjoyed the class very much.

Was great.

Looking forward to Reiki 4.

I guess I need to start working on that now.

I want to thank all the students whose scores and comments are represented here.
