I’m going to tackle this one more time. I say that everyone has the ability to do Reiki, and can learn to do it without having an attunement. Most, if not all other Reiki masters will tell you differently. Well, I have a couple places in William Rand’s book I want to point out to you. J

William Rand wrote the book “Reiki, The Healing Touch” which claims it is a first and second degree manual. Although it does give the hand positions and tell a method of channeling the Reiki energy, it states that it is meant to be used with proper instruction from a teacher. (I agree with this as the only way you will know if you are truly doing it right is to be taught be an instructor. Never try to learn Reiki from a book.)

In the first section, Rand states,

“Reiki is a special kind of energy that can only be channeled by someone that has been attuned to it.”

He goes on to say,

“While it is possible that some people are born with Reiki or have gotten it some other way, most people need to receive a Reiki attunement to be able to use Reiki. Therefore, most healers who have not received the Reiki attunement from a Reiki Master are not using Reiki but another kind of healing energy.”

Further on in chapter 5, Rand talks about the Reiki symbols. He, like Diane Stein state that there are no symbols given in Reiki 1. They say that the symbols I was taught were Reiki 1 symbols (emotional healing and increase power) and the distance symbol (which I give in Reiki 2) are symbols to be given at a Reiki 2 class and not before. The book states,

“There are no symbols in the First Degree Reiki and they are not necessary to give a Reiki treatment.”

Interesting huh? I was taught that an attunement was the passing on of symbols from the master to the student. So, if I am right in my definition of an attunement, and the symbols are not needed to give a Reiki treatment, then we have surmised that an attunement is not needed to do Reiki. Right? Or is Rand doing something else for an attunement?

By reading Diane Stein’s “Essential Reiki”, she talks about attunements. Although she seems to do them somewhat differently than I was taught, the key still seems to be the passing of the symbols.

It comes back to that fact that we have a conflict. In fact, both these writers are conflicting in their own statements. Diane states that,

“Attunements are given one-on-one and may be made into a beautiful ritual or done quickly without ceremony.”

“From this point on, the person who has received the attunement is a Reiki practitioner...’

Here we again say that someone has to be attuned, yet they give no attunements until the second level. Again, it looks like conflicting statements. So maybe I am right after all, and we each have this ability (which both Rand and Stein say), but we can learn to use it without getting an attunement.

And from Dennis Miller...

But that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
