Yesterday was by far our worst day with hurricane Frances. But we’re still here and in one piece.

Twice yesterday afternoon, I had to go out in the storm and do some repair to the fence. One piece was getting blown in by the wind. It had also come unattached from the crosspiece. In propping it up, I heard a snapping sound. I think the upright broke. It will be next weekend before I can get to fixing it.

At 1:00, we lost power for three hours. My wife and I enjoyed playing a board game to pass the hours. As soon as it returned, we cooked dinner.

At 9:30 last night, the power went off again, and stayed off until 10pm tonight. We went 24 1/2 hours without electricity, something I had never had happen before. Power here has been surprisingly stable considering how many thunderstorms we get in the summer. Thankfully, we still had water. (Of course, if water service had stopped, we have 30,000 gallons outside the back door.)

It was a long, hot night with the windows closed listening to the raging wind outside. I was pleased when I woke that we had sustained little damage.

It was an ordeal for us, but I know many are still going through an ordeal, and it is much worse where they are. To these people, I offer prayers and love. And I hope that they get back to normal very soon.
