Starships

When I heard the news about the death of Gene Roddenberry, I started thinking about the entertainment he had created.  Through the entertainment, I saw the dream that so many have followed because of the great optimism of the programming.  This dream made people work to become more than they might have otherwise been.  This dream through programming that gave us characters that cared, and made people work to be like them.  This dream that got a space shuttle named Enterprise.

The news of Gene's death spurred me to write an article that appeared in two newsletters.  Then one night while driving back from somewhere, we heard 'Do You Believe in Magic' on the radio, and I suggested to Shirley that we could work with it based on 'do you believe in starships'.  She then said that if we did, it would have to be a dedication and be changed to 'he believed in starships'.

The song was performed by the first two iterations of FreeFall, (as well as a group called On The Mark) and received many compliments.  It takes the idea created by Gene, and puts it on our shoulders, saying 'if you want this to happen, make it happen'.  Good advice no matter what you are talking about.

Starships

By Brian Dean

(From an idea by Shirley Dean)

Dedicated To The Memory Of

Gene Roddenberry

He believed in Starships and exploring space,

and the courage and spirit of the human race.

And maybe if you watch and listen,

you can catch the dream and enhance the vision.

He dreamed about starships and the final frontier

so we'd build up hope and get there from here.

He believed in a starship called the Enterprise.

He saw the world through such different eyes.

He dreamed of what it really could be,

and through the dream mankind's destiny.

He saw the future of the human race,

and then made the dream take us to that place.

If you believe in starships, dream along with me

and we'll make the world into what it can be.

And we'll try to keep the dream alive,

and someday there will be an Enterprise.

We'll just keep dreaming till the dream comes true.

Its up to me, and up to you.

Do you believe in starships?

Believe in a starship called the Enterprise,

believe in a future that will come alive,

believe man's future comes from hope not fear,

and send him off to the final frontier.

If you believe in starships.

Believe.

If you believe in starships...
